Parenting 101: I Caught My Teen Son Watching Porn

Parenting 101: I Caught My Teen Son Watching Porn

The internet can be a scary place. For teens, the internet can mean a lot of temptation and curiosity. Pornography is something that has become readily available on the web. Have you recently discovered your teen son watching porn? If so, this can be very alarming. Confronting your teen about this can be extremely uncomfortable for many reasons. You may not know exactly what to say or how to say it. The fact of the matter is that viewing porn regularly can have negative impacts on one’s lives especially during developmental and vulnerable years such as adolescence. Just because you feel uncomfortable or unsure of how to approach the situation doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. You should prioritize addressing the topic head-on with your teen.

The Do’s and Don’ts

There are specific ways in which you should go about having the pornography discussion with your teen son watching porn. First, know the things you SHOULDN’T do which include: teen son watching porn

  1. Ignore the situation. Ignoring it won’t make things go away. Realize that your teen experiences sexual thoughts and curiosity just like everyone else. And as a parent, you have the job of addressing these type things with them.
  2. Degrade him. Do not shame your son for his sexual curiosity. Often times, exposure to porn happens first by accident or by the influence of others. Making your son feel small or like a horrible person is not the way to approach the situation.
  3. Let him continue and hope for the best. Maybe you don’t see it as a big deal. Maybe you think plenty of people watch porn and are okay. But that is not the mindset to have. Pornography can grow into an addiction and impact daily lives. Pornography today is a lot different than was even a generation ago.

After steering yourself clear of the don’ts, come up with an action plan involving the things you can and should do. Here are some helpful tips of things you should do:

  1. Educate them. Provide your son with dependable and trusted resources that can answer their questions so that the endless pit of google is not their only option.
  2. Get talking. Open up the conversation with your teen. Ask them what they think or believe to be true about watching porn.
  3. Monitor in a meaningful way. By no means do you want to make your teen feel untrusted or smothered. However, there is a way to healthily monitor them. Holding them accountable for developing healthy habits and using self-control is a part of them developing their own independence.
