Residential Treatment Facility for Boys: When Social Media/News Creates Real Anxiety

Unless you’ve been checked out of social media or the news for the past year, you probably know how stressful the information flowing out to the population through these outlets is. Regardless of who you’re voting for, this election has been intense and anxiety-ridden–it has thrown the whole country into chaos and ripped a deep scar between many Americans. This type of stress being constantly plastered on the news and social media doesn’t just affect adults–it affects our children, too.  As a residential treatment facility for boys, we pay attention to current events that may impact young minds in a negative or positive way–lately, the current events could only have a negative effect.

US election and Brexit causing anxiety

Everytime I switch on the television or check social media, it seems like everyone is screaming that the end is near. That Brexit will collapse world markets–that the US election will result in the destruction of the world. It’s all rather dramatic, but it leaves a mark, whether I want it to or not. The incessant bombardment of bad news creates a ball of anxiety in my stomach–I can only assume it’s the same for others. But what about our children? How are they coping?

Well, according to a recent BBC article, teens in the UK aren’t doing too well. For one counseling service, there’s been an increase of 35 percent in just one year–you can imagine what that coincides with. When asked what their worried about, the answer was most consistently, “Brexit and the US election.” I don’t blame them. Most likely every adult around them is discussing it, social media is discussing it, the news is discussing it–they can’t escape and they can’t do much about it, either. Many of these teens are not old enough to vote, which creates a type of helplessness that only they experience and often parents do not understand.

If this is happening in the UK, you can only imagine how young people are feeling about the election that’s being discussed across the world. The election is mentioned at least once on every news outlet each day–articles and headlines are bound to force their way onto our kids’ social media feeds.

What parents can do

Well, taking away their phone probably won’t solve the issue. They still hear about these problems from discussing it with friends to overhearing your conversations. And honestly, we shouldn’t want to completely shield them from these adverse times in our history–what we should do is talk about it. Sit your teen down and genuinely ask them their opinion on the matter. Ask them how it makes them feel. Be open and non-judgemental towards their answers, otherwise they’ll just shut down. There needs to be an open channel of communication between you and your child–that way, they’ll be more inclined to come to you when they have questions or feel stressed out about an issue (like the US election).
